Situated on the banks of the Molonglo River next to Scrivener Dam, the National Zoo & Aquarium and Jamala Wildlife Lodge are just 10 minutes from the centre of Canberra. The National Zoo & Aquarium is Australia’s only combined zoo and aquarium, giving visitors the opportunity to explore, learn and relax amongst a wide variety of both native and exotic animals, fish and reptiles.  Jamala Wildlife Lodge is the ultimate overnight safari and Canberra’s first luxury lodge experience. With just 18 rooms this amazing package gives guests exclusive access to a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the Zoo’s beautiful residents.

 

ACCESS

We are located just 10 minutes’ drive from the CBD on Lady Denman Drive, next to Scrivener Dam. Lady Denman Drive is accessible from the Tuggeranong Parkway, Parkes Way, Cotter Road & Clunies Ross Street. Canberra airport is a short 15 minute drive or taxi ride. Complimentary parking is available onsite, alternatively an Action Bus service operates from the City Bus Exchange daily.

 

ACCOMMODATION

Jamala Wildlife Lodge offers three accommodation precincts: uShaka Lodge, Giraffe Treehouses and Jungle Bungalows, each with their own unique wildlife experience.

 

USHAKA LODGE

A beautiful 7 room lodge with a stunning lounge and dining area, pool, spa and tropical gardens, all of which are reserved **for the fortunate few who stay in uShaka Lodge. This is the owners’ former residence and has varying room sizes and designs. Your adventure starts in the living area, with a magnificent shark tank extending from one end to the other and with three of the coolest Colobus monkeys watching you from the other side! From the minute you walk in the door you will be transported to deepest Africa – every part of uShaka is decorated in a truly African lodge theme and features fine carvings, artworks and artefacts from throughout Africa. The indoor and outdoor entertaining areas are only metres from the edge of Lake Burley Griffin and have magnificent views across the lake to Black Mountain. uShaka is the Zulu word for shark, but also refers to Shaka Zulu who was one of the most influential monarchs of the Zulu kingdom and a stay here combines the magnificence of Africa and the wonders of the ocean.
** Please note, uShaka Lodge is for the exclusive use of those guests staying in uShaka Lodge rooms, however, guests staying in JB and GTH are welcome to relax in the lodge lounge area after the morning tour, until the 11am checkout.  When Jamala is at capacity, uShaka guests will have pre dinner drinks in the Rainforest Cave, and dine upstairs with the sharks.

 

uShaka Lodge – Lemur Rooms

The Lemur Rooms overlook the Molonglo River and one looks towards Scrivener Dam and Black Mountain and the other overlooks the lion enclosures. They have a large viewing window looking directly into the lemur enclosure where you can watch this fascinating troop play! The Lemur Rooms are able to cater for guests with disabilities

uShaka Lodge  – Wild Encounter Room

A terrace and garden are outside your room, but we take you into the zoo in the morning to visit the cheetahs, where you have a special hands-on meeting with the fastest animal on earth!*. Go into their enclosure to meet these unrestrained big cats! This is the only room in all of Jamala Wildlife Lodge where this is included! The Cheetah Room is situated adjacent to the lodge lounge area and has a spa bath and separate shower. Additional bedding utilises a roll away bed.

*Up to 2 adult guests can meet the cheetah. Please note that because animals natures and reactions can change, no guarantee can be given that we can introduce you to the cheetah. In the rare event that this meeting cannot happen, we will take you to one or more personal meetings with other animals after discussing options with you.

uShaka Lodge – Reef Room

The only room at Jamala that features a large viewing window looking directly into a 5 metre deep ocean aquarium! The Maori Wrasse and Flowery Cod and their friends will spend as much time checking you out as you do watching them. Pop over to the other window and see if you can spot the hyenas. This room is situated in a private corner adjacent to the uShaka lounge room and offers the best of both worlds! Additional bedding utilises a roll away bed.

uShaka Lodge  – Wild Encounter Room 2

This room is a short stroll from the main lounge, down a flight of stairs, with views of the Molonglo River and surrounds. It has a private terrace and its split level design features a lounge area that can comfortably accommodate 2 children.  Additional bedding utilises a double pull out sofa bed.

 uShaka Lodge –  Wild Encounter Suite

A terrace and garden are outside your room, but we take you into the zoo in the morning to visit the hyenas*. After meeting them up close, you will understand why this misunderstood animal is regarded as one of the most fascinating of all. The Hyena Suite is part of the main Lodge and features 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom, which has a spa bath and separate shower. It is perfect for larger families or two couples, as the 5th and 6th guest stay free! Bedding consists of 2 x King Size beds and 2 sofa beds.

uShaka Lodge – Shark Grand Suite

The Shark Grand Suite has its own private floor in uShaka Lodge. Guests will be taken onto a terrace adjoining their suite that sits directly above the shark tank and they will have a private feeding of these majestic creatures. The suite features 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (the main bathroom also has an indulgent spa bath). Both rooms feature king beds and the bed in the 2nd room also splits to become 2 single beds. Additional bedding in the 2nd room utilises single pull out sofa beds. It is ideal for large families or 2 couples. The 5th and 6th guests stay free of charge.

GIRAFFE TREEHOUSES

The Giraffe Treehouses are set amongst lush surroundings allowing guests to overlook and wander freely amongst a friendly herd of animals in a private enclosure. At the end of your afternoon tour, you will have the opportunity to feed one of our resident giraffes, ‘Hummer’, from your balcony (very occasionally he may not visit and we may have to go to him). All Treehouses feature king beds, bath tubs, bath robes, optional climate control, fold out sofa bed, complimentary wireless internet, music system with MP3 input, television with complimentary Foxtel and premium amenities. Additional bedding utilises a double pull out sofa bed.

JUNGLE BUNGALOWS

The Jungle Bungalows are luxurious individual suites adjoining a variety of enclosures throughout the property. A glass wall is all that will separate you from a pride of lions, a tiger, cheetahs, brown bears or a Malayan sun bear! Regardless of whether you are relaxing in your lounge area, resting in bed or taking a leisurely bath, you will only be a heartbeat away from these amazing creatures. All rooms feature king beds, bath robes, indulgent bath tubs, optional climate control, complimentary wireless internet, music system with MP3 input, television with complimentary Foxtel and premium amenities. Additional bedding utilises a double pull out sofa bed.

Due to the animal’s reactions, children must be over 14 years old and over 1.5 metres tall to stay in the Lion or Tiger Bungalows. Children under 18 can’t stay in the Cheetah Bungalow. Please note that in the event that a guest arrives with children who don’t meet these requirements, we will not be able to accommodate them in one of these rooms and we may not be able to accommodate them elsewhere. Please check heights etc before proceeding further. Children 6yo and over can stay in the Sun Bear or Brown Bear Bungalows.

CHECK IN/OUT TIMES

On arrival at the Zoo, guests can park in the main car park and make their way through the landscaped gardens to the Jamala Wildlife Lodge entrance (or be dropped off at reception).

Guests can check into Jamala Wildlife Lodge anytime between 1.30pm and 3.30pm (later check is available, but please check with Jamala on animal encounter times). Those checking in between 1.30pm and 2.15pm can go on the optional Afternoon Tour. Those checking in after 2.15pm can explore the zoo or relax in uShaka Lodge until 3.45pm, when they will be taken to their rooms. Please note that due to animal encounters, access to your room is not available before this time.

Check out time is 11am and unfortunately we cannot give late check outs as we have limited time to get rooms ready for incoming guests. Guests are welcome to explore the zoo, or you may also wish to undertake one of the zoo’s exciting animal encounters (see below).

HOURS OF OPERATION

All rooms in Jamala are situated within the grounds of the National Zoo and Aquarium. This provides guests with a great experience of the sounds of the jungle. However, it also means that it is not possible for guests to wander the zoo after dinner. For safety reasons, all guests are required to stay in their rooms once they have been returned there by staff. Guests in uShaka Lodge are welcome to enjoy the luxury of the Lodge lounge and outdoor areas until 10.30pm, after which they are requested to return to their rooms for the comfort of other guests.

CHILDREN AND GUESTS UNDER 21

Due to the nature of the experiences offered at Jamala Wildlife Lodge, we are only able to welcome children 6 years and over. However, we do offer special “Family Nights” once a month, where children 4 years and older are welcome, and tours and meal times are tailored to suit families staying on these evenings. Some room restrictions apply :

Due to the animal’s reactions, children must be over 14 years old and over 1.5 metres tall to stay in the Lion or Tiger Bungalows. Children under 18 can’t stay in the Cheetah Bungalow. Please note that in the event that a guest arrives with children who don’t meet these requirements, we will not be able to accommodate them in one of these rooms and we may not be able to accommodate them elsewhere. Please check heights etc before proceeding further. Children 6yo and over can stay in the Sun Bear or Brown Bear Bungalows.

As we are an operational zoo, all children under 18 must stay in a room with at least one adult in attendance. Due to the proximity of the Jungle Bungalows to animal enclosures, there must be at least one person 21 years or older in a bungalow.

DINING

Rates include dinner, dinner beverages and breakfast. Dress for dining is neat casual.

Guests share an exclusive dining experience in the Rainforest Cave with our “animal in residence”, ensuring a memorable night for everyone. Weather permitting, pre-dinner drinks are served on the terrace, where you may meet our hyenas, before sitting down to enjoy chefs three course “dinner party” style menu where you will enjoy fine food in the company of other guests at Jamala’s large dining tables. When the lodge is at capacity, uShaka guests will have pre dinner drinks in the Cave, and dine upstairs with the sharks.

Dinner is a set menu, it is essential to advise any dietary requirements well in advance. We are a licenced premises so please do not bring any alcohol on to the property.

Breakfast is available from 700am to 800am prior to the morning tour.

 

DRESS CODE

Dress for Dinner is smart casual. Other than that, life at the Zoo is all about the outdoors, so feel free to dress accordingly. Comfortable walking shoes, a camera and a keen sense of adventure are a must! During the hotter months we also recommend you bring a hat and sunscreen and in the cooler months it’s a good idea to pack warm clothing and a rain jacket.

 

CLIMATE

Canberra has a relatively dry climate with warm to hot summers and cool to cold winters. The National Zoo & Aquarium is open rain or shine – most of the animals don’t mind the weather, but on very hot days, some animals may be less active as they look for shade.

GROUPS

At Jamala Wildlife Lodge a group is defined as more than 12 people travelling together. As an intimate overnight experience some special conditions apply when making group reservations. To preserve the experience of other guests at the property, public speaking is not permitted in the main lodge areas unless previous arrangements have been made with the Lodge. All group enquiries should be made directly with the Lodge.

 

PAYMENT AND CANCELLATION POLICY

Full prepayment is required at the time of booking. We accept Visa and MasterCard.

Credit Card Surcharge 

Like most hotels, Jamala charges a transaction fee of 1.75%. Unlike other hotels, we donate the nett proceeds of this to wildlife conservation funds that protect species in the wild, prevent habitat destruction and/or discourage poaching by limiting the trade in wildlife.

Cancellation/Change of Date Fees

Prior to Arrival:      60 days or more | Full Refund

30-59 days | 50% of total monies paid will be refunded

29 days or less | All monies will be forfeited

No refund can be given in the event of non-arrival or any unused services due to weather disruption or animal issues**. We recommend that you protect yourself with Travel Insurance. Rates are subject to change without notice. ** Please note that whilst the National Zoo & Aquarium and Jamala Wildlife Lodge endeavour to give guests a memorable experience with our native and exotic animals, fish and reptiles, no guarantees can be given as to what animal interactions may be available and/or how an animal may behave on any given day.

 

TOURS

Jamala Wildlife Lodge offers exclusive tours for lodge guests included in the rate. The itinerary is designed to allow guests the opportunity to meet some of our beautiful residents at scheduled times while still allowing you time to relax in your room. We will endeavour to introduce you to as many of the following animals as possible: lion, tiger, cheetah, brown bear, sun bear, otter, meerkat, monkey, lemur, rhino, hyena, painted dog, giraffe, zebra, antelope and others.

 

Afternoon Tour 

The Afternoon Tour takes you out into the Zoo with our talented keepers to meet some of our favourite animals and learn interesting facts about them.

 

Early Morning Expedition

Our Early Morning Expedition takes you backstage to experience the Zoo as it awakens and prepares for the day. Your morning tour does change daily depending on what is happening in the zoo but you will be able to experience a number of animals ‘in action’.
